Local Activities

The Norfolk Area Child Abuse Prevention Council plans and implements specific projects to:

  1. raise awareness of child abuse issues, and
  2. promote healthy, nurturing families.

Meeting are held bi-monthly on the 2nd Wednesday of designated months.

 

Activites of the council include:

Stuff the Bus: This is an August campaign to collect needed school supplies for low income families. The supplies are donated by the public, collected at local participating merchants, gathered and sorted by Child Abuse Prevention Council members, and distributed to Norfolk area public and parochial schools.

Child Abuse Prevention Month: Past activities for this campaign have included:

  • providing placemats to locally owned restaurants,
  • providing calendars with ideas to strengthen families to local schools for distribution to families,
  • Coordinating the creation of Public Service Announcements by local students to be read on local radio stations,
  • Sponsorship of a local billboard with a prevention message,

Child Care Providers Conference:  The Council provides printed brochures to daycare providers at their annual conference.

Children's Day Festival:  Council members staffed a booth and provided activities for families attending the annual Children's Day Festival.

Donated books to local elementary schools for school counselors and children to read regarding child abuse

Light of Hope Campaign: Council members handed out glow rings and agency literature as resources for help.

PATCH Health Fair:  Sponsored a booth at the annual Planned Approach To Communith Health (PATCH) health fair and distributed information about child abuse and good parenting skills to the public.
